Although this doesn't really answer your question, we did the reverse,
updating the replica and running like that for a few days before getting
around to the main server, and everything *seemed* alright, although I
must admit I didn't look too hard. I did verify by checking the logs and
looking at a few files that at least some updates were coming through, so
it was not a show-stopper. Perhaps that's another option for you to
consider.

Thanks for the reply. I think at this stage we've decided to setup 2 *
2.5.7 servers replicated, and then effectively replace both at once.
At least that way we can be sure it's a 2.5.7 talking to a similar one -
and hopefully avoid any weird issues that might have occurred.
