(This is mostly to keep you posted, though if you disagree on the negative index thing then speak up).
I posted a thread on the NumPy mailing list which got much response. I updated the buffer spec accordingly as how I would like it myself now. In particular: - Anne Archibald convinced me about the need for negative index support: http://projects.scipy.org/pipermail/numpy-discussion/2008-June/035079.html (You can nest yourself to the rest of the thread from there if interested. Note especially that unsigned datatypes will be used rather than pragmas to flag positive indices) - Nobody complained about the [float64, 2]-syntax.
