Hello everyone,

I have been lurking on this list for several years, and enjoying the posts.
This list is a wonderful resource!

Now I am wondering if anyone can help me find more information on my family
members who left Czernowtiz in the 1890s. Are there any good records that far
back?

Here is what I know:

My great-great-grandfather Israel Morgenstern was born in Sadagora (about 4
miles from Czernowtiz) in 1851. He owned a whiskey distillery (in Czernowitz,
I think, but perhaps in Sadagora). I’ve heard that it burned down in the late
1880s – and was the impetus for them to move to the U.S.

His wife, my great-great-grandmother was Chaia Ridberg (or Rotberg, Rittberg,
or Rittenberg). She was born in Toprowitz, also near Czernowitz.

Their 7 children were born there – and they lived in either Sadagora or
Czernowitz.

They left for the U.S. in 1890, and them emigrated to Jerusalem, Palestine in
1898, where they opened a tea & coffee shop in the Jewish Quarter of the Old
City.

Israel and Chaia are supposedly buried on the Mount of Olives in Israel.

I would love to find out more about their life in (or near) Czernowitz,
including about their business.

I would also love to learn whether they are in fact buried on the Mount of
Olives.

I would also love find a way to track down the descendants of their daughters
in Israel. One of their daughters, my great-grandmother (Rose Morgenstern)
returned to the U.S. in 1906, and we have lost touch with all the family
members who remained in Israel.

Any suggestions?

Thank you,
Margo Hittleman
