Hi Fred,
So glad to hear that your citizenship was restored. You deserved no less and
certainly so much more. I am third generation, so for me restoring citizenship
is more complicated, but it is worth doing because it honors my family’s memory
and serves justice.
In my grandfather’s case he was born into what was the former Austria Hungary
empire but was then stripped of that citizenship after World War 1 because of
anti Jewish edicts. My great grandmother was murdered in 1941 in Transnistria.
My grandfather fled what was then Romania and survived.
The question of restoring statehood that was rightfully my family’s is complex.
For me in the United States the question is even more relevant now as I watch
the rise of white supremacy and fascist movements in real time.
I’m so grateful for the voices here, Karin, David, Arthur, Ruth, yours, and
others who are sharing their experiences and impressions.
Best,
Janet
