Dear Bruce,

This is a great resource that you have thankfully pointed us to, especially
taking into account the valuable supplementary references by Yossi Yagur.
Precisely because the civil records of the Jewish Community are considered
lost, any trace of Jewish roots in Siret (and the surrounding area) is
outstanding. This applies analogously to the cemetery of Vizhnitsa, which is
also included in the cemetery list of Jewish Galicia & Bukovina:

Even if the particular names are not in list form, one can easily get excellent
results by using the free text search on the a. m. website. I was last in Siret
in 2012 and 2008 and remember a number of photos taken in the two cemeteries,
town and synagogue:

As always a big thank to you and Yossi for the relentless dedication and I wish
you both a great weekend!

Subject: [czernowitz-l] Cemetery documentation in Siret

Dear Friends,

Right next to the Ukrainian border is the town of Siret, Romania, which had an
important Jewish presence dating back centuries. Yet the vital record books
haven’t been found, and there are few resources available for researching our
Siret ancestors.

I just learned of important work that took place this past summer to clear and
document two of the three Jewish cemeteries in Siret – the Old Cemetery and the
“Middle” Cemetery. This work was carried out by the Jewish Galicia and Bukovina
Organization https://jgaliciabukovina.net/ . Photos were taken to document the
many artistic and elaborately decorated matzevot. All or most of the tombstones
were transcribed and are listed on the Organization’s website. Please note,
however, that these tombstones cover the period from ~1750 to 1935. Most are
without surnames, and show only the patronymic name (e.g. Resi daughter of Zvi,
Efraim Fishel son of Uri Faibish).

This article on the Jewish Heritage Europe website provides you with direct
links to the lists of names, which can all be viewed along with the
corresponding matzevot, but are not searchable by name.
https://jewish-heritage-europe.eu/2023/01/05/romania-siret-cemeteries/

Whether or these new data help provide any assistance to your research, it’s at
least heartwarming to know that some effort has now been made to care for these
important Jewish burial grounds.

Warmest wishes for the New Year!

Bruce
