I am curious about the name Chubotaru (Wikipedia lists as variations Ciobotariu or Ciubotarul, deriving from “bootmaker.” There is a Moldovan MMA fighter with this name.).
My grandmother Rachel Wiznitzer’s maiden name was Jupiter and I once read this was possibly a variation of Chubotaru, a not uncommon Jewish surname in Moldova. However, we have no documentation of her legal name or to confirm that she came to Bukovina from Moldova. Her grave stone gives her Hebrew name “Rachel bat Meir Menashe”, and we have never found a reference to her or her father, a rabbi. Any information would be appreciated.
