Hi Steven,

Welcome to the list! One of your questions is easy to answer - the
photo was taken at the Aoun studio in Beirut, then Syria. Nasr Aoun
was one of the prominent Beirut's studio photographers in the late
19th - early 20th century. So, your dating of the picture is good.
What two good girls from Czernowitz were doing in Beirut is a more
difficult question. At the time Beirut was not a particular tourist
attraction, but it was a reasonably convenient transit point on the
way from Europe to Palestine, so that might be an explanation. The
dresses look like the uniforms and they both wear what looks like
medals, so they may have been associated with some organization. If
you can scan the medals with the best possible quality, it may provide
some more clues.
