Hello,
My great grandfather Jacob Schackman emigrated in 1902 from Focsani,
Romania and settled in Dallas, Texas, USA. He died in 1937, leaving us with
few clues on where he was from originally. Following bread crumbs, I
recently found that a brother, Simon Schachner, later immigrated to
Chicago. Simon came from Czernowitz and most of his children appear to have
been born there. I've been trying to get educated on the region and what
records are available. Grateful to have found this list - I have so many
questions, will try to pace myself.

1) Working through the vital records on FamilySearch (Metrical books,
1856-1940), I see that there are other collections, for example vital
records for the district and a group called "Public Records." Are there any
guides to these collections, if not indexes?
2) Jacob and Simon were both carpenters. One of Simon's sons was a
tinsmith. Did guilds exist for these trades in Czernowitz, and do records
survive?
3) I'm finding addresses from the vital records. Are maps available with
street and number notations? Do business directories exist from the period
1880-1910?

Thank you for your help.

Joanna Shear
