Hi Veronique,

With the “details” from Czernowitz.geneasearch.net , you can usually find an
image of the actual record at familysearch.org . You need only register for a
free account.

Then you can access digital images from this location:
https://www.familysearch.org/search/catalog/1378569?availability=Family%20History%20Library
Click on the “camera” icon under the column “Format” to view corresponding
digital images. Pay attention to the Item number when viewing these digitized
images from microfilm.

For Salmen Gebuhrer 1850 – not found since the record books start in 1856.
For Berl Gebuhrer 1874: Not found – possibly born elsewhere? But his children
Adolf, Regine, and Hilda are found on Geneasearch.

I found records for Regine and Berta (and a few others) on FamilySearch. I know
my way around those images, after a fair amount of practice. I’ll forward to
you what I found, but in a separate email.

On Geneasearch, there are other Gebuhrers like Heinrich, Margit Iohanna, and
Max. These are only the results from Birth records. You may also find results
from Marriage and Death records.

Good luck with your efforts!

Bruce

Thank you for all the helpful pointers. I'll dig into the suggested resources.

Regarding https://czernowitz.geneasearch.net/, does it fully index the
FamilySearch set "Metrical books, 1856-1940"? I used the index to successfully
find some records on FamilySearch, but it wasn't clear whether the indexing
effort had completed.

Thank you,
Joanna

Hi Joanna,

On Question 1, there is an index online that will help you locate Schachner
records on the FamilySearch (Metrical Books, 1856-1940) site. See:
https://czernowitz.geneasearch.net/

The Czernowitz “district” records cover suburbs or towns surrounding
Czernowitz. I think they are listed in the record group description online.

The Public Records section are not so well-described, but contain a variety of
official records that are not vital records.

Question 3: There is an excellent collection of maps on our associated website:
http://czernowitz.ehpes.com/maps/index.htm

Good luck!

Bruce

Subject: [czernowitz-l] New to the list
Hello,
My great grandfather Jacob Schackman emigrated in 1902 from Focsani, Romania
and settled in Dallas, Texas, USA. He died in 1937, leaving us with few clues
on where he was from originally. Following bread crumbs, I recently found that
a brother, Simon Schachner, later immigrated to Chicago. Simon came from
Czernowitz and most of his children appear to have been born there. I've been
trying to get educated on the region and what records are available. Grateful
to have found this list - I have so many questions, will try to pace myself.

1) Working through the vital records on FamilySearch (Metrical books,
1856-1940), I see that there are other collections, for example vital records
for the district and a group called "Public Records." Are there any guides to
these collections, if not indexes?
2) Jacob and Simon were both carpenters. One of Simon's sons was a tinsmith.
Did guilds exist for these trades in Czernowitz, and do records survive?
3) I'm finding addresses from the vital records. Are maps available with street
and number notations? Do business directories exist from the period 1880-1910?

Thank you for your help.

Joanna Shear
