Thanks again, Edgar, for another wonderful Snippet from the past! Two comments:
1) I believe the name “FEIGER” is on a plaque inside the Radautz main
synagogue, indicating that this family gave a significant donation for the
renovation and upkeep of the synagogue. In fact, I think the name mentioned
below, Dr. Paul FEIGER, might be the exact individual named on the plaque.
Someone else can correct this if I’m wrong. 2) The mention of the Jewish Center
of Forest Hills brought back a memory for me. Though my family didn’t belong to
this synagogue, this was the location for my bar mitzvah reception in 1968. I
had a bunch of original Bukovinians celebrating with me! - beloved
grandparents, great aunts, great uncles, cousins, etc.

Warmest wishes,
Bruce

Subject: [czernowitz-l] A Snippet from "Die Stimme" [The Voice] in 1957: FROM
THE BUKOVINA CIRCLE IN NEW YORK

Czernowitzers...

A new edition of “Die Stimme”, the monthly Newsletter for the Bukovinians, was
published on 01-JUL-1957. Let's take a journey into the past together to
comprehend what moved our ancestors, their relatives and friends back then!

The Jews of Bukovina have always had a passion for travel, and those who were
not — like my family and I — trapped behind the Iron Curtain took full
advantage of their new freedom to travel and the significantly improved
economic conditions. New York became an intercontinental hub, and there it was
the hospitable home of publisher Dagobert D. Runes and his wife Mary that stood
open to Bukovinians from all over the world. The article in the July 1957 issue
of “Die Stimme” FROM THE BUKOVINA CIRCLE IN NEW YORK therefore transcended city
and national boundaries:

“We have received the following report from New York:
In honor of our fellow compatriot, Prof. Dr. Richard Blum (Canada), who was
here for a brief visit, Ing. Jakob Hacken hosted a party to which the guest’s
friends were invited. Attendees include, among others: Dr. J. N. Melzer, Dr. J.
Kessler, Dr. Bernhard, and Dr. Landau with their wives. - Dr. Paul Feiger
(Paris) spent a short time in New York with his wife and son. - Mr. Henry
Brettschneider has immigrated from Vienna to the U.S. with his wife Steffy to
take up permanent residence. - Mr. Moses Schärf, an industrialist in La Paz,
spent a few days in New York on his way to the Rotary Congress in Geneva. -
Meyer Frendel, a former furniture manufacturer from Czernowitz who is now a
business owner in New York, was granted American citizenship. - Mrs. Luise
Pisk, née Schnee, who currently lives in Buenos Aires, spent a few days in New
York with her husband while en route to Paris and Vienna. Mrs. Pisk read with
deep emotion the article in the ‘Die Stimme’ dedicated to her brother, Dr.
Jaques Schnee, may he rest in peace. - Mrs. Mary Runes, née Gronich, the wife
of the well-known publisher Dr. Dagobert Runes, participated in the art
exhibition organized with great success to benefit the American Friends of the
Hebrew University. Mrs. Runes served as co-chair with Mrs. Louis Gimbel Jr.,
Mrs. Eric Berger, Mrs. Lisa Howard-Löwenthal, and Mrs. Lawrence Roose. Mrs.
Mary Runes, who plays a significant role not only in Bukovinian circles but
also in the highest echelons of American society thanks to her charm, has been
re-elected president of the Waldenschool. - On June 16, the wedding of Mr.
Charles Lindenfeld, son of Dr. Markus Lindenfeld and Dr. Vera Lindenfeld, to
Miss J. Jaffe took place at the Jewish Center in Forest Hills. Mr. Leo and Mrs.
Mädi Schärf from La Paz stopped in New York for a brief visit following an
extended stay in Israel and Europe.”

Dr. Manfred Reifer founded the Chug Olej Bukovina [Association of Immigrants
from Bukovina] and decided to publish “Die Stimme”. He entrusted with this task
Dr. Elias Weinstein, the former editor of the renowned daily newspaper
“Czernowitzer Morgenblatt”.

I will try to let “Die Stimme” continue to resound in the future and invite you
to follow me on this journey. Your comments are highly welcome!
