Dear Bruce, Thank you for your kind words, highly appreciated. I’m so glad that the excerpt from "Die Stimme" brought back fond memories for you. The December 1957 issue of "Die Stimme" features two more bar mitzvahs, a "magnificent" one at the "Rodeph Schalom Synagogue" and a "regular" one once again at "Forest Hills Temple." Lots of familiar names from Bukovina - Ebjoy!
"A celebration was recently held at the 'Rodeph Schalom' synagogue in Manhattan to mark the bar mitzvah of Richard Runes, son of Mrs. Mary Runes (née Gronich) and our prominent compatriot Dr. Dagobert D. Runes; the event was a resounding success. The religious services were conducted by the rabbi of the Reform congregation “Rodeph Shalom,” Dr. Louis J. Newman, and the well-known New York cantor, Hirschberg, who led the prayers with the assistance of a well-trained choir accompanied by an organ. Young Richard recited the prescribed prayer passages with admirable confidence. The ceremony was attended by numerous friends and relatives of the family, including American celebrities and members of the Bukovina colony in New York. After the service, a formal reception was held at Dr. Runes’ home. The guests remained together in high spirits from 1:00 p.m. until well past midnight. Among the approximately three hundred attendees were: conductor Vladimir Brailowsky, pianist Stanley Bavin, Rabbi Dr. Louis Newman, Prof. Carliss Lamant, philanthropist (Columbia University) Mr. Norman Blaustein, the publisher Mr. David Epstein, the editor Dr. Milton Akers (director of the Walden School), Mrs. and Mr. Charles Goodman (Grow Construction Co.), Prof. Dr. Josef Lubard (Columbia University), the well-known psychiatrists Dr. Manfred Sakel (formerly of Vienna) and Dr. H. L. Gordon; Also in attendance were: Mr. Herman Burg, Dr. Gusty Runes, Mrs. and Mr. Eric Berger, Claire Gronich, Mrs. and Dr. Gershweier, Mrs. and Dr. Lindenfeld, Mr. Stahl, Mrs. and Dr. Stahl, Dr. Szelby; also from Bukovina: Mrs. Rica Hopkins, Dr. Gisela and Martin Scheid, Dr. B. and Mrs. Ronald, Mrs. and Ing. Josef Delcau, Mrs. and Mr. Robert Frendel, Mrs. and Mr. Marcel Engler, Mrs. and Mr. Jack Schieber, Miss Evelyn and Dr. Victor Landau, Mrs. and Mr. Herman West, Mrs. and Mr. Fabian Roll, Mrs. and Mr. Otto Wolf, Mr. Frendel Senior, and many others whom we cannot list by name due to lack of space. This celebration will remain a pleasant memory for all participants for a long time to come. On October 26, the Bar Mitzvah celebration of young Richard Willner, son of Mrs. Edith Willner, née Gottlieb, and grandson of the late Bukovina industrialist Otto Gottlieb, took place at the 'Forest Hills Temple.' Among those attending the celebration were: Mrs. Iwanier, Mrs. Engler, Dr. Hugo Gottlieb, Dr. Alfred Sekler, Dr. Victor Landau, Karl Ausländer, and Harry Ternbach. Following the service, a reception was held at the Willner residence, where the guests spent several hours together in a convivial atmosphere." Two comments: 1) I believe the name “FEIGER” is on a plaque inside the Radautz main synagogue, indicating that this family gave a significant donation for the renovation and upkeep of the synagogue. In fact, I think the name mentioned below, Dr. Paul FEIGER, might be the exact individual named on the plaque. Someone else can correct this if I’m wrong. 2) The mention of the Jewish Center of Forest Hills brought back a memory for me. Though my family didn’t belong to this synagogue, this was the location for my bar mitzvah reception in 1968. I had a bunch of original Bukovinians celebrating with me! - beloved grandparents, great aunts, great uncles, cousins, etc. Warmest wishes, Bruce From: [email protected] <[email protected]> on behalf of Edgar Hauster <[email protected]> Date: Sunday, May 17, 2026 at 02:23 To: CZERNOWITZ-L <[email protected]> Subject: [czernowitz-l] A Snippet from "Die Stimme" [The Voice] in 1957: FROM THE BUKOVINA CIRCLE IN NEW YORK Czernowitzers... A new edition of “Die Stimme”, the monthly Newsletter for the Bukovinians, was published on 01-JUL-1957. Let's take a journey into the past together to comprehend what moved our ancestors, their relatives and friends back then! The Jews of Bukovina have always had a passion for travel, and those who were not — like my family and I — trapped behind the Iron Curtain took full advantage of their new freedom to travel and the significantly improved economic conditions. New York became an intercontinental hub, and there it was the hospitable home of publisher Dagobert D. Runes and his wife Mary that stood open to Bukovinians from all over the world. The article in the July 1957 issue of “Die Stimme” FROM THE BUKOVINA CIRCLE IN NEW YORK therefore transcended city and national boundaries: “We have received the following report from New York: In honor of our fellow compatriot, Prof. Dr. Richard Blum (Canada), who was here for a brief visit, Ing. Jakob Hacken hosted a party to which the guest’s friends were invited. Attendees include, among others: Dr. J. N. Melzer, Dr. J. Kessler, Dr. Bernhard, and Dr. Landau with their wives. - Dr. Paul Feiger (Paris) spent a short time in New York with his wife and son. - Mr. Henry Brettschneider has immigrated from Vienna to the U.S. with his wife Steffy to take up permanent residence. - Mr. Moses Schärf, an industrialist in La Paz, spent a few days in New York on his way to the Rotary Congress in Geneva. - Meyer Frendel, a former furniture manufacturer from Czernowitz who is now a business owner in New York, was granted American citizenship. - Mrs. Luise Pisk, née Schnee, who currently lives in Buenos Aires, spent a few days in New York with her husband while en route to Paris and Vienna. Mrs. Pisk read with deep emotion the article in the ‘Die Stimme’ dedicated to her brother, Dr. Jaques Schnee, may he rest in peace. - Mrs. Mary Runes, née Gronich, the wife of the well-known publisher Dr. Dagobert Runes, participated in the art exhibition organized with great success to benefit the American Friends of the Hebrew University. Mrs. Runes served as co-chair with Mrs. Louis Gimbel Jr., Mrs. Eric Berger, Mrs. Lisa Howard-Löwenthal, and Mrs. Lawrence Roose. Mrs. Mary Runes, who plays a significant role not only in Bukovinian circles but also in the highest echelons of American society thanks to her charm, has been re-elected president of the Waldenschool. - On June 16, the wedding of Mr. Charles Lindenfeld, son of Dr. Markus Lindenfeld and Dr. Vera Lindenfeld, to Miss J. Jaffe took place at the Jewish Center in Forest Hills. Mr. Leo and Mrs. Mädi Schärf from La Paz stopped in New York for a brief visit following an extended stay in Israel and Europe.” https://www.philosophicallibrary.com/about-us/ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dagobert_D._Runes https://difmoe.eu/uuid/uuid:7521f5a7-7537-4561-9ada-78b4bce18765 Dr. Manfred Reifer founded the Chug Olej Bukovina [Association of Immigrants from Bukovina] and decided to publish “Die Stimme”. He entrusted with this task Dr. Elias Weinstein, the former editor of the renowned daily newspaper “Czernowitzer Morgenblatt”. I will try to let “Die Stimme” continue to resound in the future and invite you to follow me on this journey. Your comments are highly welcome!
