Czernowitzers...

A new edition of “Die Stimme”, the monthly Newsletter for the Bukovinians, was
published on 01-AUG-1957. Let's take a journey into the past together to
comprehend what moved our ancestors, their relatives and friends back then!

Fortunately, Salomon Wininger, who was born in Gura Humora in Bukovina,
completed his life’s work and, with THE GREAT JEWISH NATIONAL BIOGRAPHY, he
created a monumental encyclopedia of the Jewish people. We can be grateful that
his entire work, in seven volumes, published in Czernowitz between 1925 and
1936, is available to us online (see link). In his work, Salomon Wininger
compiled more than 14,000 biographies, but—of course—not his own. Dr. Fränkel
fills this gap in the August 1957 issue of “Die Stimme,” and we do so here
today as well:

“Schlomo Wininger was and remains one of the great biographers of the Jewish
people. His name will always be counted among the small number of recognized
Jewish historians and biographers. More than fifty years ago, still in Theodor
Herzl’s time, he set himself the life’s work of documenting what Jews have
accomplished in all fields and contributed to the advancement of culture and
civilization. Wininger lived and worked in Czernowitz. Inspired by the movement
for the national rebirth of the Jewish people, he worked tirelessly for several
decades to complete his ‘Great Jewish National Biography.’ This standard work
on the Jewish people was published in seven volumes between 1925 and 1936,
containing biographical data, descriptions, and details about the lives and
works of some 14,000 figures. Individuals—men and women of all eras and all
countries—who have been immortalized in Jewish history, literature, philosophy,
and science, as well as Jewish artists, actors, politicians, musicians, and
philanthropists of the past and present, are profiled in detail here. Many of
these became victims of Nazism, and Wininger’s work is the only reference
source where one can find biographical information about Jewish figures who
were subsequently murdered by Hitler and Himmler. Wininger never rested; even
after the publication of his magnum opus, he continued his important work to
make additions and improvements. He was in contact with people all over the
world and collected further material. Then came the War of Hitler, which also
destroyed Wininger’s home along with his library, irreplaceable materials,
manuscripts, and biographical notes. Fortunately, he was able to save himself
and has been living in Israel, in Ramat Gan, since 1951. […] Dr. Fränkel

Dr. Manfred Reifer founded the Chug Olej Bukovina [Association of Immigrants
from Bukovina] and decided to publish “Die Stimme”. He entrusted with this task
Dr. Elias Weinstein, the former editor of the renowned daily newspaper
“Czernowitzer Morgenblatt”.

I will try to let “Die Stimme” continue to resound in the future and invite you
to follow me on this journey. Your comments are highly welcome!
