Why should your ontology be useless. In general, an ontology has the 
purpose to create a kind of "shared meaning" or "shared understanding" 
(see, e.g., [1,2]). If you follow, for example, some best practises for 
publishing Semantic Web vocabularies (see, e.g., [3]), you make these 
descriptions accessible (and machine-processable) for everyone. So your 
ontology won't be useless at all. It is then integrated in the Web 
ecosystem.
Using existing is from my point of view the better choice, since one can 
re-use existing knowledge. The added value on this approach should be 
higher than on an automatically generated mapping file with a 
non-established (because freshly created) ontology.
