I was wrong about this. I was looking at the wrong child record. There are a 
dozen 
openings in this order and a bunch of them have the basic instructions as 
above, but 
one has, on my Mac:

{{{
Route for Crank 6 ½” to 12” x 2 ½” high x ½” deep, Handle 13 ½” to 15” x 1” 
wide x ½” 
deep
}}}

So at least this takes away one of the confusions for me (I couldn't figure out 
what 
layer in our stack converted a unicode char of ½ to 1/2).
