Thanks for your suggestions johnf.
First option did not raise any errors but did not function as expected ie if I
cleared the field and then saved the record no error messgae came up, and if I
went to another record and then returned the cleared value was still in place
ie the clearing had no effect. I wonder if that is because a NOT NULL was
entered in the database definition for this field - I'll try again with a
requirement for the length of the field to be greater than 4 and see if all
works OK then.
The second option caused a compile error when I ran the form.
