Well, if Facebook is only interested in building a social graph they don't really need access to the actual content. They only need to keep track of who is talking with whome. And to capitalise on that, it certainly helps to be able to read some of the messages but even if 50% of the people are using encryption, it probably doesn't matter because at least some of your "friends" will indirectly betray your interests in whatever product is being advertised. But there are people on this list who are much more knowledgeable about traffic analysis than I am. As for the person who asked about GoogleTalk/Jabber/XMPP end-to-end encryption, this is described in RFC3923 which is implemented in several XMPP clients. XEP-0136 also describes server-side message archiving, including an "off-the-record" mechanism although that one won't protect you from a rogue server. I don't know specifically about Pidgin and GoogleTalk.
