Stocks edge lower
Stocks edged lower Friday, as investors examined a new report from the government 
showing the economy grew faster than expected in the second quarter.

Poverty rises and income levels drop
The poverty rate was 12.1 percent last year, up from 11.7 percent in 2001. Nearly 34.6 
million people lived in poverty, about 1.7 million more than the previous year.

Second-quarter GDP revised up
The U.S. economy grew at a better-than-expected 3.3 percent annual rate in the second 
quarter, the government reported Friday, raising hopes the country is finally on the 
brink of mounting a sustained rebound from the 2001 recession.

Consumers turn glum in September
U.S. consumer sentiment dropped unexpectedly in September, a survey showed Friday, as

Insurers' Isabel losses seen low
Swiss Re, the world's second largest reinsurer, estimated that Hurricane Isabel, which 
hit the eastern United States this month, caused billions of dollars of damage but 
less than $1 billion in insurance claims.

France's Alstom to sell key unit
French engineering firm Alstom said on Friday it agreed to sell a core power unit to 
state-owned Areva for 950 million euros ($1.1 billion), dumping assets to raise cash 
while expectations mounted of a break-up.

Tenet's top lawyer resigns
