A Reflection on Today's Scripture:
They left everything and followed him. (Luke 5: 11)
Today's readings center on God's mercy, His seeking out sinners upon
whom to pour out His grace, that He may enlist them in the task of
making His salvation known to all the world. Those who humbly admit
their sin and whose consciences are still alive will welcome His
healing touch and serve Him out of loving gratitude. The prideful,
thinking themselves perfect, turn away, denying the very purpose for
their existence.
Isaiah's receptivity to God's call and cleansing touch resulted in
his becoming an instrument through which the Lord could call the
faithless Israelites back to Himself. His prophetic words not only
denounced the people's sins but also brought them a message of hope;
they would be given a Savior bringing forgiveness, leading them to
all goodness and truth.
St. Paul, once a zealous persecutor of Christians, was converted to
Christ dramatically by being thrown from a horse and struck with
temporary blindness, proving that God may occasionally resort to
severe measures to get someone's attention. His many letters to the
churches, which constitute a large part of the New Testament, outline
the theological basis of our Faith.
Peter, a simple fisherman, came to believe, when after a fruitless
night of fishing, Jesus enabled him to fill his nets almost to the
bursting point. As Jesus promised, Peter became a fisher of men and
later proclaimed him the first Pope of our Church.
Merciful God,
enable us to fulfill our prophetic mission
of bearing the heart and mind of Christ into this world,
that others may be saved. Amen.
