A Reflection on Today's Scripture:
"While a mighty wind swept over them..."
Nowhere are the failings of the translations of the Bible more
evident than in the moments of poetry that infuse and inspire the Old
Testament. In the New American Bible we are treated to an impersonal
mighty wind that blows over the abyss. But in the older inspired
translations we hear this: "And the spirit of God moved upon the face
of the waters."
What a beautiful word from God. The spirit of God still moves upon
the face of the waters. And the breath of God still infuses His
entire creation. There is not a moment that passes that is not from
God. God watches over the transition from one second to the next. If
He did not, there would be no transition. The Universe is an
infinitely fragile thing. One moment of inattention from its loving
Creator and it would burst asunder.
But God teaches us here and elsewhere how He continually creates and
continually interacts with His creation. He moves upon the face of
creation, and when we are attentive we can sometimes catch a trace, a
shadow of that divine motion.
The first chapter of the book of Genesis is a wonderful place to
breath in the newness of life each moment. It is a place to rest and
a place to love God -- completely, entirely, and without reservation.
This is a place where we can feel His touch and know the salvation
that Love has wrought since the very beginning.
