A Reflection on Today's Scripture:
He desires to be a God of mercy, not of justice . . .
Today's first reading from Genesis, an excellent one, is worth
looking up in the Bible, as it details Adam and Eve falling from
grace. The consequences of that first disobedience were very severe
and the human race is collectively condemned to manifold miseries
until the end of time.
Yet this inescapable curse and the misfortunes it brings, is
mitigated by the mercy of God the Father who sent us Jesus to become
our Atonement in reparation for all our sins -- past, present and
future. We are grateful to discern the loving elements of concern and
pity shown in the human nature of Jesus. At the miraculous feeding of
the multitude who had come to listen to Jesus, we hear Him say: "My
heart is moved with pity for the crowd. By now they have been with me
three days and have nothing to eat."
>From this story, we can see that it is a very deep element of the
divine nature to be concerned for us. Should it be any surprise that
God wants to forgive us when we are repentant? As Catholics we are
instructed by Holy Mother Church that all God asks is that we knock
on the door of His mercy through the Sacrament of Reconciliation, of
Confession. Through this channel of God's grace will come the healing
salve of divine forgiveness and newfound strength to resist future
temptations.
