A Reflection on Today's Scripture:

Our readings today make reference to our very precious sense of
=touch= and the correlation with =obedience= in our freedom to use
this sense. In the first reading Eve is forbidden to touch the fruit,
but chooses to do so. In the second reading Christ uses His sense of
touch to heal the deaf man. He first however, looks to the heavens,
as though to make reference to the will of the Father.

Each of our senses is a beautiful property of our bodies, one that we
sometimes do not realize or appreciate until the gift fades or is
lost. We have the capability, because of our free will as humans to
use those gifts for the good, such as to enlighten, comfort, heal, or
to abuse them by their inappropriate use, letting them become a
burden to our own souls and perhaps those of others.

We have so many opportunities in a day to make a positive use of
these senses. Making eye contact and gently touching the elderly
grieving widow, listening to the reading of a child, speaking words
of encouragement to the busy co-worker take so little time and can be
built into our own routines.

It is beautiful in both a spiritual but also an historical sense to
witness the final anointing of an elderly person! If only we knew the
many times of healing by those hands, the eyes, ears, and lips. May
our senses serve as a bridge that is never broken when our time ends
and eternity begins!
