A Reflection on Today's Scripture:
Why does this age seek a sign?
Once again the Pharisees came forward and began to argue with Jesus.
And how, precisely are any of us different from the Pharisees? Not by
much. Many are the times when we find the teaching of Jesus
inconvenient -- it gets in the way of pleasure or advancement or
self-image, or any number of a hundred million different concerns
which call for our attention and our devotion.
Sometimes we say, "Oh Lord, if only you would give me a sign. If only
you would confirm what we already know." Why? Why would God deliver a
sign to confirm our weak and frail human understanding of Him? Why
would He simply rubberstamp our suppositions?
But Jesus said, "I assure you no such sign will be given." And why is
that? Because we have the biggest, most glaring, most obvious sign of
all. We have the sign of the cross, the center of our faith, the
center of the universe. For in our vain human attempts to undo a God,
God undid the evil we wrought in our first disobedience. God used an
unforgivable trespass to forgive us all our trespasses. If you ever
wonder why we sing "Amazing Grace", surely this paradox is reason
enough.
