A Reflection on Today's Scripture:
Today's reading from Genesis must have been truly frightening for
Noah -- the command to flee from the wrath of a God full of regret
that He had ever created men and women. Sin is such a terrible slap
in the face of a loving Creator, expecting in justice only praise,
gratitude, and good works from those whom He had made so capable of
all three. Sin makes God an uncomfortable alien in His own world. And
humankind was essentially helpless to repair the damage.
Why are we not filled with terror because of the accumulated sin of
generations since Noah? Because God did repair the damage. And we are
justified in His sight. But what about the sins of our own day? Are
they not sufficient to provoke an even greater vengeance from the
Offended One? Every time we see a rainbow, we are reminded of God's
promise never to annihilate our world, especially since it is a
redeemed world, a world which, despite its evil, mirrors the face of
Christ in millions of baptized souls, and the image of God in
millions still awaiting baptism. Our loving praise, united with the
saving Sacrifice of the Mass, makes daily reparation for daily sin,
and averts the wrath of a patient and forgiving God. How privileged
we are!"
