A Reflection on Today's Scripture:
Sometimes it is difficult to focus on Holy Scripture - to come up
with any thought that seems relevant to the present time and
circumstances. It is cause for wonder and maybe even concern and
certainly to ask, "Are the distractions in life so pervasive that
they cloud the Word of God so that its light cannot get through.
I think it's important to consider that possibility and do the only
appropriate thing in such a situation and that is, to ask the Lord
for help.
If, in faith, we turn to Him and ask for help, we can be assured that
help will be dispatched. That doesn't mean we will always receive
what our imperfect nature may hope for, but we can be assured that
the way the Lord answers or doesn't seem to answer, is really just
what we need and is best for our salvation.
The problem is, we aren't always thinking of our salvation, but more
frequently of our honor, status or comfort. Is it any wonder then
that often it seems God hasn't heard or answered us at all?
We are told however that it is precisely in these circumstances that
God is closest to us. He's so close that His beauty, His truth and
His goodness have blinded us and we are unable to see things right.
Let us then not become despondent by our lack of understanding, or
our failure to perceive God at work through His Holy Word, but let us
like the blind man in today's gospel, stay long enough in the Lord's
presence that He may touch us repeatedly, so that we might see.
O Lord,
let Your words, give joy to my heart,
your teaching, light to my eyes.
Amen.
