A Reflection on Today's Scripture:

In today's Gospel, Jesus invites us to renounce ourselves and take up our
cross and follow Him. We are familiar with this invitation; but do we really
understand what it means for us?

In our everyday lives, it is difficult not to let our ego prevail, not to
follow our own desires to pursue our goals. Often, we don't think of the big
picture; we don't question the justice or integrity of our actions and how
they will impact our own lives and those of others in either the short or
the long term. If we were to query our motives more regularly, we would be
putting ourselves in a better position to 'renounce' those desires which are
not beneficial to others and would choose other courses of action which bear
fruit. By doing this, we carry the cross of love.

Our daily lives are made up of many choices. It's worth reminding ourselves
that every day Jesus calls us to deny our selfish inclinations, to take up
our cross in whatever form that may be, and walk with Him. In this way, we
truly become followers of Jesus.

    O Lord,
grant us the grace and strength to follow you,
to carry our crosses with love in union with you.
        Amen.
