A Reflection on Today's Scripture:
The Chair of St. Peter.
"I for my part declare to you, you are 'Rock' and on this rock I will
build my church, and the jaws of death shall not prevail against it."
(Matthew 6:18-19).
Today's feast was attested proclaimed as early as the mid-fourth century.
Today the chair of Peter is occupied by a holy man who has compassion,
strength, and guidance from the Holy Spirit. Our pope, John Paul II,
continues in his journey on earth showing the compassionate heart of Jesus:
weekly audiences, a consistory to elevate Bishops from all over the world to
Cardinals. If you haven't signed onto our web site (see below) to read the
wonderful messages from our Holy Father, you are missing out. Also the web
site www.Zenit.org is very informative about our Holy Father.
We all need shepherds to watch over us: our Holy Father, the cardinals,
bishops, pastors and priests of our parish. We're truly blessed when we
reflect on the time that has transpired since Jesus spoke to Simon Peter.
When we think about our own faith and the "rock" which it was built upon, we
can reflect on the person in our lives who brought us to Jesus Christ. Given
the eyes of faith to see and believe, we must always work at growing
stronger in the faith, that we too might be shepherds to one another. Jesus
asks the same question of us today "Who do you say that I am?" Hopefully we
can respond, "You are My Shepherd, O Lord; I want for nothing!"
Help me Lord
to help others nourish their faith
so that all may have the keys
of the kingdom of heaven. Amen!
