A Reflection on Today's Scripture:
Today we consider friendship and marriage. The readings speak of the
wonderful treasure we find in a true friend!
What better foundation for marriage than that of a solid friendship
before one commits to the true meaning of marriage. We are reminded
that God joins husband and wife together and that no person should
interfere with that sacred union.
Marriage is the living sign, the sacrament of the covenant of Christ
and the Church. Because the spouses represent and give witness to the
fidelity of Christ to His Church it is very important that couples
work at deepening their relationship and that friends and family are
supportive of these efforts.
At times young couples, anxious to express their vows and move on
with their lives are frustrated with the gentle, but firm, request of
the Church, that they take several weeks to study and reflect on the
meaning of marriage. We spend months preparing for our first Holy
Communion and the sacrament of Confirmation. Marriage is a lifetime
union...why not at least a few weeks of preparation? How sad that
some couples never realize the beautiful significance of marriage!
How appropriate that Christ began His public ministry at the wedding
at Cana! We pray that He take the frail elements of every wedding,
our weak human natures, and lift them as a living symbol to the
Father!
