A Reflection on Today's Scripture:

Being a teenager during World War II meant being initiated into the
realities of life more quickly. Each Friday, our family would attend
the Novena to Our Lady of Sorrows. There was an afternoon service and
an evening service; and at both, the church was filled to overflowing.
Pondering each week on the seven swords of sorrow that pierced Mary's
heart, I became aware of how much she identified with our own fears
for the safety of our relatives and friends serving overseas. Just as
Mary's sorrows helped us to bear our own, so too does meditation on
the Passion of Jesus increase our personal love for God.

Today's first reading tells us to bring a grateful heart, a loving
heart, to our worship--not just giving, but giving back. Being always
aware of how much God has given us makes it all the easier for us to
give up anything that stands in the way of daily worship in the spirit
of gratitude and enthusiastic love.
