A Reflection on Today's Scripture:
Jesus looked at him with love
For all that St. Paul says about love in 1 Corinthians 13, he doesn't
prepare us for this particular aspect of love. Patience, kindness,
long-suffering, and so forth -- but here we see another side. Love
pulls no punches. Love does not make the truth palatable or shape the
truth to the individual.
That's what we experience today as we listen to Jesus. "Take all you
have, sell it, give the sum to the poor and come and follow me."
Whoa! Isn't that a tall order? But it is said in love.
Love tells us what is best for us whether we want to hear it or not.
Love pulls no punches. Love is a guide -- a trustworthy guide. And if
we listen to Love, it will guide us to eternity. Jesus is Love. He
cannot mislead, but sometimes He is a real challenge to follow.
Sometimes it is hard to listen -- it's easier to listen to our inner
promptings, our feelings, our longings. But easier isn't better.
"Better" is to follow Love wherever He may lead. "Better" is to
listen, as hard as it may be, and ask Love to make obedience
possible. Let us ask Jesus to help us to love Him.
