A Reflection on Today's Scripture:
Today's first reading shows God in the role of a beggar -- seeking
with gentle persuasion for a hearing. The Word knocks kindly on each
heart's door, seeking entrance. And, like a good Provider, He brings
seed for sowing, seed that will save the listener, and make of him a
herald of Good News. The Word is a seed of truth, a seed of justice,
and a seed of love. But it must first be planted in the hothouse of
our own hearts before we can transplant it, with the Master Sower's
help, to the hearts of others.
The forces of evil in our world resist the whole process. The key is
in the mind, the will, and the heart of those who receive the Seed.
Evil must always crumble before the power of a listening faith.
In the Gospel, we hear the words "Thy Will be done." The word of God
roams the earth, seeking entrance. It will not return void, but
rather transformed through faithful love and fruitful works to the
Father. "Thy kingdom come" -- through us, who in the privileged role
assigned to the baptized, are the voice, the hands, and the feet of
Christ, the Savior.
