A Reflection on Today's Scripture:

In today's first reading we listen again to the story about Nineveh.
It's a story that helps us to understand that even very sinful
cultures, people and nations have the capacity to change and turn
away from their evil ways. Furthermore we are reminded that God
accepts true contrition and in His mercy pours the balm of His
forgiveness on the wounds of sin. How important it is for us to
assimilate this truth, otherwise we would have little cause for hope
and rightfully experience real despair.

We need not say, like the King of Nineveh, "PERHAPS the Lord may
relent and forgive and with hold his blazing wrath." Instead, we have
the sure and certain grace of knowing that God DOES forgive those who
acknowledge their guilt, repent and seek His help to not sin again.

During these beginning days of Lent, let us then spend some time
trying to comprehend the truth of God's forgiveness. Let us remember
our sinfulness, not so as to again be burdened by guilt, but that we
might experience the reality of the saving, freeing, cleansing blood
of His Christ.

Not only has God saved us from His rightful blazing wrath, but He has
created in us a clean heart, a new heart capable of doing His will.

          "Change our hearts this time,
Your love says it can be...."
