A Reflection on Today's Scripture:

Our first reading from Deuteronomy bears a close reading today. The
poignant prayer of Azariah, standing in the fire with hands uplifted,
crying to the Lord not to give up on His people, not to annul the
covenant. How, indeed, our world has been brought low for its
sinfulness, and how we long for morally right leaders! The photos of
our Holy Father show him bearing the sins of our world in his body,
for he is the Vicar of Christ. I wonder how many of us have reached
even the number three in the times we have forgiven a person for an
offense, particularly if its the same offense! And seven times seems
quite impossible. Yet God tells commands that we forgive seventy
times seven! And the spirit of forgiveness could save our world. It
is this, precisely, that renders powerless the forces of evil, wins
God's mercy, and sends our critics to their knees."
