A Reflection on Today's Scripture:

We need more Josephs . . .

Scripture tells us very little about the husband of Our Lady. But
enough to paint a picture of an upright, righteous, honorable,
responsible man - an example to all men even today.

What makes him an example? Foremost, he obeyed the word of God both
by following the angel's instructions and by following the law.
Additionally, he cared for the Christ-child, fleeing to Egypt to
protect Him and he personally brought the child up, educating Him by
teaching Him his own trade. In summary, he was a father.

Today seems to be the day of the "single parent family." Dad is
conspicuously missing in many instances. In many cases Dad does not
follow the commands of God, does not care for his children and fails
to teach them a thing.

But as Christians (both men and women) we can make a difference. By
volunteering to work with young, single mothers, by adopting an
"unwanted" child, by teaching our own kids responsible behavior and
by spreading the Gospel, just to name a few, we can make a
difference.

Yes, we need more Josephs -- many more.
