A Reflection on Today's Scripture:

So often we hear the phrase: "Life is so complicated! <sigh>"

Perhaps we make it that way with our own priorities. This can also be
true in our attempts to understand and practice our faith. Christ,
knowing us better than we know ourselves, keeps His answers and
instructions direct, concise and simple....even telling parables to
make the information clearer.

The first reading today emphasizes how complex our lives have been
throughout history. One line especially seems so timeless:
"The work of our hands are our gods." (Hosea 14:4 [Douay-Rheims])

Some of the common gods of today in the developed nations are
materialism, prestige, addictions, and sometimes even some of the
priorities given to some forms of recreation. People spend hours and
hours watching sports on T.V. Why, for instance, are there so many
jokes about certain sports? Many have to do with the priorities given
the game. The reading from Hosea goes on to describe in almost lush
phrases how God will reward our turning instead to Him. That, of
course, requires that we let go of our little gods and give God the
priority in our life.

In the gospel message from Mark, Christ gives us the two great
commandments.....love of God and love of neighbor. Why do we make it
all so complicated?

Please, God........be patient with us!
