A Reflection on Today's Scripture:

How many of us, when we read the words that John wrote in today's
Gospel, can quickly skip over them, as so many of us do when we read
scripture. What does the scripture mean? What is the truth? Is it
trusting, honesty, and conformity with the real world? Rules are
rules, do we follow them?

We all have our own 'faith-encounter' with God. It is personal; it is
private to the point that we do not ever reveal this to anyone but
the Lord. Do you believe that Jesus is the Son of God? Of course you
do, even though you don't express it very often.

Do you ever question why Jesus was born in a stable instead of a
palace? Is it folly that He should die on a cross rather then conquer
the world with an army of angels? Sometimes our relatives and friends
cast dispersions on we who follow Jesus. Yet, like John, we are
called to testify to the truth. With the grace that we receive from
our reception of Holy Communion along with the Holy Spirit guiding
our very lives, we find the way to follow Christ.

All the experiences that we have enjoyed, solid moral teaching, moving
liturgies, and all the prayer opportunities offered by our church have
brought us closer to Jesus. The scripture readings from today are not just
stories from the past, they are guidance in our life right now. Jesus calls
us to come to Him to live the life that scripture describes and to accept
our Lord as "the Lord of our Life."

In prayer then let us turn to Jesus for the divine life he offers.
Let us ask to experience His mercy so that we can put aside self-
righteousness and harshness towards others and become more merciful
as He is.

Lord, I come to you as I am. I turn to you for your mercy.
Fill me with yourself so that with your help
your love may flow out of me to others around me! Amen!
