(John 5:30) In today's gospel Jesus himself declares that he is the Son of God. It may seem like a small nuance, but this is different from the other Gospel stories we have heard this year where it is God the Father who reveals the identity of Jesus. This difference however, demonstrates how Jesus has embraced His ministry and the role given to Him by the Father. As if there were ever any doubt, we see now that Jesus has no identity crisis; He knows who He is and what He is expected to do. It reminds me that at the time of our baptism God identifies us as His child. He claims us as His own, with all the inherent status and responsibility being a child of God involves. It follows that at some point in time, we must make a transition as Jesus seemed to do in today's gospel and acknowledge our role as a child of the Heavenly Father and all that this intimate relationship entails. Let us then pray that through the merits of Jesus we might grow in grace to be more like who we really are. Then may we accept our God-given role, do the Father's will and gain the favor of eternal salvation not only for ourselves, but like Jesus did, for the salvation of the world. - Donna Raye Nelson, ocds (c)2000 The Way, The Truth, The Life.
