A Reflection on Today's Scripture:
"Lord, to whom shall we go?" (John 6:68)
Jesus insisted that his followers would have to eat his body and drink
his blood, that they must partake of his divine humanity. It was
completely unthinkable for a Jew to consider committing such an
abhorrent act. Indeed, some of the disciples then left Jesus, and, I'm
sure that the "faithful" ones had some long second-thoughts about
staying. But Jesus, knowing their weakness countered, "What, then, if
you were to see the Son of Man ascend to where he was before?" (Jn 6:62)
Imagine yourself there in that riveting scene a mere 1,972 years ago.
Did not this God-Man Jesus multiply some loaves of bread and fish to
feed thousands? Did he not cure the sick and even bring the dead to
life? This was the great life-changing decision, placed before the
disciples. Jesus was explaining how greatly the Holy Trinity desires to
be among us, that we might seek Him out, to live in His presence, even
intimately: in the reception of the Holy Eucharist.
If only we might drop our fears and defenses and like Peter, let go of
the vanities, the macho act, the false security of this life. Thanks to
all these years of spiritual nurturing and proof of the Divine Presence,
we can say, "My Lord and My God - Dominus meus et Deus meus."
