A Reflection on Today's Scripture:
In the natural order, our lives are quite consumed with the needs for
nourishment, rest and activity. In meeting these needs we are
somewhat dependent on one another.
The readings today, in a sense, point out the same picture in the
supernatural order, that is our need for one another. The conversion
story of St. Paul still leaves him dependent on Ananias to lay hands
on him and to be filled with the Holy Spirit. (Acts 9:17) Sacraments
come to us through other people. We are reminded of our need for each
other.
In the Gospel of St. John he relates the promise of Christ:
"If any man eat of this bread, he shall live forever:
and the bread that I will give is my flesh,
for the life of the world".(John 6:52)
We needed the ultimate gift of Christ on the Cross and today we need
the ability of our priests to bring us Christ in the Eucharist as our
spiritual food.
Acts 9:5 also points out the awesome responsibility we have in our
relationships one to another! When St. Paul asked who was speaking,
after he had fallen to the ground, he heard...."I am Jesus whom thou
persecutest". As Christians we are all called to be "vessels of
election" (Acts9:15) to each other. We are all called to minister to
our brothers and sisters throughout the world!
What a vocation!
