A Reflection on Today's Scripture:

What a wonderful story! St. Luke makes it all come alive -- the
people furious with Paul and Barnabas because they cut off the
exploitation of that visionary, their being flogged, thrown into
prison. Did those people really think that would be the end of the
Good News? Do you remember that wonderful song from Bernstein's Mass?
There's no chaining the Word of the Lord! Whenever and wherever evil
has tried to do so, God's Word has broken through with fresh power.
Even today in China, Vietnam, Africa, those who oppress Christians
find that it's like trying to douse a forestfire with a child's water
pistol.

Whenever we doubt the providential power of God in our lives, re-read
this passage from the Acts of Apostles. Whenever we doubt our own
strength of heart to persevere, reflect on this wonderful story. We
can do so much more than we ever dare to dream, when we realize that
we are merely channels, instruments of an impatient God, longing to
bring the word of hope to His people. Lord, God, I will stop my
complaining, my holding back, my fear. I place all my trust in your
Sacred Heart flaming with love.
