A Reflection on Today's Scripture:
"That the love with which you loved me may be in them
and I may be in them." (see John 17:26)
When Christ came into this world as a man, He identified Himself
completely with the human race. He, the sinless One, agreed to enter
this sinful world and subject Himself to every indignity and
suffering to be visited on Him by our fallen race. He had but one
purpose in coming, to transform us in His holy image, to lift us up
to abide with Him here and throughout eternity.
A major reason why Christianity has not had a greater positive impact
on world conditions is that so many remain Christian in name alone.
These have refused to identify themselves with Christ by abandoning
the hatred, greed, competitiveness and self-absorption that dominates
this world. They caught a glimpse of what it would cost them of
"self" if they were to seriously commit to an intimate love
relationship with God, and so chose instead the devil's way of
autonomy and self-gratification.
Today's Gospel passage is the most poignant of all Christ's
utterances. It expresses the God-Man's declaration of His undying
love for those whom He brought into being, saved from destruction and
offered new life by the total giving of Himself, now and throughout
eternity. We see Christ's one burning desire, to impart the love and
glory He possessed "before the foundation of the world" to His
beloved creatures.
What pain our Lord must feel for us all, for the needless, eternal
loss of those souls who willfully reject His precious gift of new
life and for the suffering of the virtuous being victimized by those
continuing in sin.
Blessed Lord,
through Your faithful souls,
make Your presence more strongly known on earth,
that others may seek the beauty of Your truth and love.
Amen.
