A Reflection on Today's Scripture:

In both of today's readings, there is the theme of "Mission." Paul,
summoned to Miletus and then on to Jerusalem, sums up for the Church
at Ephesus his whole work of seeking repentance from the Lord and
preaching faith in Jesus Christ. Rather than boasting, he is pointing
the way for every Christian. We are all called and anointed through
Baptism. And this calling is a life-time endeavor. There is no
retirement from this mission! Keeping our mind on this calling, and
defining who we are in terms of this Mission provides a sure guide
for decision-making in our lives. Like Paul, when we approach the end
of our lives, we do not retire from our work, but prepare to accept
whatever kind of ending the Lord has in store for us.

Jesus, too, is preparing his apostles for his departure. There are
two departures: one by death on the Cross, the other through
ascension into the cloud; one to suffering, the second to glory.
Again, we are called to the same Mission as Jesus: death to self that
others may live through our witness to the Good News. It is a
life-long Mission to which we must adjust as circumstances demand.
Sometimes that Mission is joy-filled and productive. At other times,
it is difficult and seemingly empty of results. To follow Jesus is to
trust in the Father's love and the Spirit's power. We are called, we
are chosen! That is who we are!"
