A Reflection on Today's Scripture:
Some of the most beautiful lines in all of Holy Scripture are
contained in today's Gospel of John. In it we hear Jesus praying to
the Father on the night before He died. He is in the company of His
apostles and yet it is so intimate that it seems as though we are
eavesdropping. If you close your eyes and meditate on the words it
isn't hard to imagine that Jesus talked in just this way. His words,
if we really listen to them, are astounding - especially if we
recognize Who is saying them and to whom they are addressed.
"Father," Jesus says, "protect them with Your name, guard them from
the evil one, I consecrate myself for their sake.
The Only Begotten One has asked the Father that we might be guarded
from harm, and that in return, He offers to God His very self as
payment for the fulfillment of such a request. It comes, not in a
casual conversation but at the hour when, in perfect obedience and
love, Jesus will do all the Father asks.
Let us then bow our heads in profound humility, in recognition that
the final request of such a good and gracious Lord should be on
behalf of us poor sinners.
May the sacred mystery of God's love transform our hearts and minds
into the heart and mind of Jesus; that the name of the Father through
the Son, in the power of the Holy Spirit, may be forever honored and
glorified. Amen.
