A Reflection on Today's Scripture:
He still had one to send: the Son whom He loved.
This parable has become transparent to those of us who live in the
world today. We understand it in a way that people of Jesus' time had
no way to do. But as with many of the parables this isn't something
that happened once and then was over. Jesus points out that God sent
many servants, both before and after Jesus. God never fails to send
servants,though we all tend to do the same things to them over and
over.
Jesus, of course, is the greatest of these servants. But all of the
saints and martyrs come to us as adopted sons of the Father. He sends
them for our good, to help us, and to lead us home. But we treat them
just as we treated Jesus.
Remember, that whatever you do for the least of these your brethren,
so you do unto Jesus himself (see Matt. 25:40). So every time we
insult a servant of God, every time we choose acrimony over unity,
every time we choose dissent rather than collaboration -- we are
consenting to the death of Jesus.
