A Reflection on Today's Scripture:

The old song goes "...so be good for goodness' sake!" And that is so
hard -- to persevere in patience, taking care of one's own integrity
in the midst of weariness, lack of appreciation, and ill-fortune.
That is the lesson in today's readings from Tobit and from the
Gospel. Tobit, in his efforts to be righteous, caring, and protective
of his fellow-Jews, lost everything. In addition, a seemingly random
accident (bird-droppings), caused him blindness. Reduced to utter
dependence on his wife, Tobit "looses his cool", scolding her in
anger.

How often we feel humiliated by our faults, when we have tried so
hard to be kind and caring, often going the extra mile for people.
And then we fall into sin or imperfection. The only response of the
faithful friend of Jesus is to pick ourselves us, apologize if
necessary, and continue from where we left off. And in the
humiliation, we are blest!
