A Reflection on Today's Scripture:
When we study current marriage statistics, we're shocked to learn
that one out of every two marriages will end with divorce or
separation. There is so much sadness and harm from broken marriages,
but the worst is the effect on the children. Very often they blame
themselves for what has happened to their family structures.
Today, we read the story of Tobiah and Sarah. Sarah already had seven
husbands who died on their wedding night. Tobiah, a man of faith,
knew he wanted to take Sarah for his wife. On their wedding night
Tobiah got up from bed along with Sarah to pray for mercy and
deliverance. A most beautiful prayer flowed from the lips of Tobiah
and of course the outcome was a long life for the bride and groom.
This beautiful story urges us to reflect on the marital situation. It
is said that the family is a miniature church. That "church", the
couple and their children, must be built on a foundation that is
solid, that is Jesus Christ. A marriage that is strong is one that
recognizes the presence of God with them. No one is perfect in this
life. Despite their imperfections, couples must work very hard to
build each other up and thereby build a strong marriage. Just imagine
if all couples started marriage on their knees in prayer and
continued to pray together.
O, most Holy Spirit,
Call down your mercy upon all contemplating marriage.
Help them to love one another in a spirit of sacrifice. Amen.
