A Reflection on Today's Scripture:

In today's First Reading we hear both Tobit and Sarah asking the Lord
to put them out of their misery and let them die. Isn't it so like
human nature to think that we know what's best and to beseech God to
do it? And too, isn't is so like God to ignore us (or so at first it
seems) and do something altogether different?

In this Scripture story and indeed like so many of the stories of our
own lives we learn that God's ways and wisdom are beyond ours and
that if we would just let God be God and cooperate with Him and His
plan, we would be so much the better for it. Instead we spend time
and tears trying to get God and others to follow our script, our
version of how life should be.

With the coming of the Holy Spirit in Baptism and Confirmation, and
indeed every time we invite the Holy Spirit to be the wind that fills
our sails and steers our little boats; we have operative, the
all-discerning mind and heart of God. Then we are not limited to our
own finite and constricted views, but have access to the joys not
only of this world, but the one that is to come.

Pray then not so much that God do what we ask, but that we instead
might do what He wants. Seek to know the way and will of the Lord -
study the life of His Incarnate Son and invite the Holy Spirit to
unlock in you the treasures of His heart.
