The Catholic Calendar for Monday, June 11, 2001 The Tenth Week in Ordinary Time St. Barnabas, apostle Complete story: http://www.christdesert.org/public_texts/martyrology/ Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word: Acts 11:21-26 Psalm 34:2-9 Matthew 10:7-13 Full text: http://www.nccbuscc.org/nab/index.htm A Reflection on today's Scripture: The Beatitudes The Sermon on the Mount is packed full of the wisdom of Our Lord. Chief among these wonderful teachings is the set of blessings called the Beatitudes. These could almost be considered helpful hints for all stages in life. Who has not mourned? Who has not thirsted for righteousness (even if our understanding of righteousness is limited by our fallible intellects and weak wills)? Who has not been meek? Who has not been insulted either directly or indirectly for their belief in Christ Jesus? Each of us has encountered many, if not all of these things. And Jesus tells us that there are blessings in each of these things, true, solid, blessings. There are treasures laid up in heaven. But He's also letting us know that the trials of life have their blessings. Yes, we may be rewarded in heaven, but by living through these things, we become equipped to help God's people here on Earth, we become living blessings to those enduring similar trials. No trial is a pleasure and at the time there never seems to be good that can come from it. But with God all things are possible, and blessing can come from what seems like a curse. If you are suffering now, turn to one of God's people for His blessing on you. If you have suffered, open up to someone who is suffering similarly, be God's blessing for that person.
