A Reflection on Today's Scripture:
"If someone wants to go to law over your shirt . . ."
Let's face it. We live in a litigious society. There isn't much that
someone isn't willing to go to law over. Some say you can't have
Christmas displays. Others say that any form of prayer anywhere
outside a church is some form of civil offense. We live in a society
drunk on law and completely ignorant of any true sense of justice.
Given this, Jesus' command is even more important today than when He
first gave it. We need to be aware of the example we set before the
world in every aspect of our behavior. We must be the first to
relent, the first to turn the other cheek.
Can you imagine for just a moment a world in which everyone was
willing to abandon his or her own interests in the interest of peace
and harmony with others. There couldn't be a conflict because
everyone would be giving up their "rights" to everything before
anyone asked.
Next time you get a chance, instead of lashing out, which may well be
within your rights, see what happens when you turn the other cheek.
At first, nothing, but eventually, with God's grace, you will have
transformed a small part of the world.
