A Reflection on Today's Scripture:
"By their fruits you will know them" Matthew 7:16 (Douay-Rheims)
In today's gospel, Jesus tells us to be on our guard against
deception, against false prophets. How are we to recognize what is
authentic and not just a cover-up? Must we always be wary and
skeptical, hardly trusting anything or anybody? It can make us
question how we dare be like little children; yet that is what we are
told we must be in order to enter the kingdom of God. But, wouldn't
having child-like trust leave us vulnerable prey to the wise and
clever?
As question piles upon question, we begin to understand that it is
precisely because we are so little and that we need our Jesus to
protect and defend us. He doesn't warn us to be careful then run and
leave us with out a clue how to be careful. Instead He provides us
direction -- divine direction. He speaks simply, like to a child:
"you can tell by its fruit."
With these sparse but profound words Jesus teaches us the beginning
steps for authentic discernment. Let us then consider what kind of
tree Jesus is. What kind of fruit does He produce?
