A Reflection on Today's Scripture:
Jacob's life was one large struggle. First, with the help of his
mother, he stole Esau's birthright, claimed his father's special
blessing, which, incidentally, was a very profitable move. Some of
his later business deals were shady, to say the least. Why, then, did
God himself wrestle with Jacob? Why didn't he just "clip his wings",
and humble his high-handed ways? Instead, he wrestles with him,
contenting Himself with a good swift blow to the hip. Since Jacob had
to carry that with him the rest of his days, it was a cause of
greater care in not offending his God. How loving is our God! He
forgives our sin, encourages us to courageously struggle with both
interior and exterior obstacles. Above all, he wants some sign of
spirit and perseverance in us. Our God is incredible! Let us praise
Him!
